 First: Defining social responsibility:

The role of any institution towards the society is reflected in the activities practiced in the different fields of a societal nature. Among these fields are: health- environment and all that is related to human rights and labor laws.

 

Second: Banque Misr’s achievements in the field of social responsibility:

1- Workers’ rights

§    Banque Misr and medical care of employees and their families

Banque Misr provides its employees and their families with medical care in a way that guarantees excellent health care and also reflects the bank’s commitment to the safety and health of its employees. The bank chooses one or more practicing doctor to handle the treatment of sick employees whether in the bank’s different headquarters or in the home of the employee if necessary. The bank’s management chooses specialized doctors, hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies, while the bank’s doctor examines the cases presented to him and recommends the suitable treatment, and also follows up on the case of the patient. The bank’s doctor can recommend patients to be transferred to specialized doctors, medical laboratories or hospitals that have a contract with the bank.

§ Banque Misr provides cars as a means of transportation for its employees

Out of Banque Misr’s belief in social participation, many social services were presented to employees. Among the services was providing an easy mean of transportation, as the bank owns a fleet of cars to transport employees from their homes to work in the bank’s different branches spread all over the governorates.

§     Entertainment fun trips

Fun and entertainment trips are considered one of the most important factors that contribute to raising the spirits of the bank’s employees. The bank is committed to developing these kinds of trips because of the positive effects it creates in employees psyches which is consequently reflected in the distinguished performance of the bank’s employees. All year long, the bank organizes trips for its employees and their families at reduced prices. 

§     Renovating Talaat Harb Club

Talaat Harb club in Imbaba Giza governorate a sports, social and fun outlet for Banque Misr’s employees and their families, and this is the pivotal role of the club as the bank is always keen on giving employees and their families a chance to practice sports and have social activities.

 

The bank’s board of directors has worked on providing the club with social and financial support so that it can be renovated and developed and become true to the name of Banque Misr and Talaat Pasha Harb. The club has actually been reopened after the renovation process on 30-1-2007, and it is worth mentioning that the club was originally opened in 27-4-1953 and its name back then was “ Banque Misr and its companies’ club”.

 

 

2- Our bank’s social responsibility towards society as a whole

§     Banque Misr honors Thanaweya Amma’s top students

 As always, out of Banque Misr’s appreciation of the importance of science and out of a belief that today’s youth are tomorrow’s generations, Mr. Mohamed Kamal Eldin Barakat, Chairman of Banque Misr and Banque Du Caire honored a group of Thannaweya Amma’s top students 2006/2007 where he gave every student a 10000 L.E savings book and the youth card BM Card. Mr. Mohamed Barakat declared that these top students deserve appreciation and honoring because of their efforts and success in achieving top positions despite their difficult circumstances, especially that every student among them has a success and struggle story that is worth of respect and appreciation. This honoring comes as part of Banque Misr’s commitment towards the Egyptian society and especially the youth sector, thus adding new thinking to society, as the cards have an effect on the rise of trade movement in Egypt and their being considered a practical method of carrying out financial dealings easily with the society moving towards being a cashless society. The BM Card also allows youth to feel independent and responsible and enables them to deal using their own savings account, while it is also considered a safe and modern method when coming to buy from different outlets whether commercial or others. The card holder can also use it in withdrawing from ATM machines in different parts of the republic. 

§    Banque Misr and its contribution in a collective wedding of 400 brides and grooms

Banque Misr is greatly interested in social responsibility being one of the main cores the bank believes in and through which the bank participates in many activities that support social development in Egypt. The bank gives great care to social development and services plans, and so Banque Misr also participates in sponsoring a group collective wedding in Sohag for 400 brides and grooms. The wedding was held in Sohag’s sports stadium on Wednesday 30-4-2008 where the bank offered them gifts as a contribution in starting their new life.

 

 §  Banque Misr sponsors the blood donation campaign for employees

In order to activate Banque Misr’s social role being an extremely important part of the Egyptian society’s fabric for 88 years, the bank under the care and sponsorship of Mr. Mohamed Kamal ElDin Barakat organized a blood donation campaign under the supervision of Banque Misr’s medical services general administration during the months of August and November 2007. The campaign was organized with the cooperation of the ministry of health and population and the Vaccine and Serum Authority (VACSERA) and 57357 hospital. Banque Misr’s participation in organizing this blood donation campaign comes as a new step added to the bank’s active social participation and responsibility towards citizens by supporting them in their problems and pains, especially patients and children who are in immediate need of blood transfusion.

 § Banque Misr’s sponsorship of 2 halls "auditoriums" for the Arab Academy for Financial and Banking Sciences

Banque Misr has continued its social role in developing the abilities of those working in the financial and banking sectors, so that they can be ready to face the increasing world changes. Banque Misr has contributed in building 2 halls in the building of the new Arab Academy for Financial and Banking Services. The two study halls had all the necessary equipment and supplies (chairs-desks-white board-data show-curtains-air conditioners-laptops-projectors)

 

3- Funding developmental projects

§   Banque Misr and the Computer for Every Household Initiative

Under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Communication, the cooperation agreement for providing computers has been signed. This agreement was presented by Egypt’s computers 2010 program- a people connected to knowledge, which is considered to be a restructuring of the initiative A Computer for Every Household that achieved noticeable success before when adopted by the bank since 2002 out of the belief in the necessity of the Egyptians being open to the world of information technology. The funding offered by Banque Misr was 500 million L.E and the total number of computers offered was 115,000 computer which is a number expected to increase now. In light of this initiative Banque Misr had a clear presence in the ICT conference in its twelfth session, and this was through effective and positive participation with 2 booths belonging to the bank in marketing and sales. The 2 booths were a great success, while the bank also appeared in a new developed shape compared to all the other competitor banks.

§   Banque Misr and making youth aware of how to deal with banks

Banque Misr lead a campaign to market the products of youth through being present in moving units in clubs and public and private universities. The bank’s management believes that progression is in the hands of youth who have to start early in their lives to learn the principles of economy and how to mange their lives financially, and so Banque Misr had this leading role in directing youth towards the world of banks and investment and introducing them step by step to the culture of the non monetary society spread currently in all developed countries. Among the cards that were promoted during the period of the campaign were BM card Internet Card and Hedaya Card.

§   SFD Loans

Within the framework of Banque Misr ‘s contribution in the support of  social and economic development and reduction of the high unemployment rates, resulting from the economic reform policy, Banque Misr finances the new and existing small enterprises  through its branches nationwide by virtue of the contracts signed between our bank and the SFD, amounting to 15 contracts with a total value of L.E. 475 million. The Bank used about 75% of the contracts' amount apart from recycling these lines in addition to loans granted through the Bank’s self-resources. Projects granted loans from the SFD totaled 9500, creating roughly 24 thousand job opportunities.

§   Banque Misr and funding small and micro projects

A body for funding small and micro projects was established in 2005 to encourage individuals to establish and start complementary industries which would contribute in raising the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Also projects worth of 204 million L.E and the number of those benefitting from the funding reached 5200 clients. The funding of this program is through 50 of the bank’s branches scattered in the east and west of Delta and Upper Egypt.

§   Banque Misr and food security projects

Since its establishment in the last century Banque Misr has participated in economic development on many different levels. Food security is considered to be among the most important sectors that the Egyptian citizen depends on in his daily life and which needs continuous support from all huge economic entities. Banque Misr has been the first as usual to actively participate as usual in providing a daily source of living and food through funding the building of grain storing cells. Consequently, Banque Misr offered The General Authority for Provisional Goods a loan to build Al Hosseiniya Cell with a storing capability of 30000 tons, and another loan to The Egyptian Holding Company for Cells and Storing to build Al Fayoum Cell with a 60000 tons storing capability. Banque Misr also funded the building of 3 other cells with a total capacity of 210000 tons. One cell was in Minya with a 90000 tons capacity, one in Beni Soweif with a 60000 tons capacity. Lately, Banque Misr has also financed the foreign component of the project establishing 4 metal cells through opening a document credit with a value of $ 10 million in the name of The General Authority for Provisional Goods and for the benefit of the Egyptian Holding Company for cells and Storing , and also for the benefit of the petroleum Projects Company (PETROJET). The loan can be transferred to Plasiny the Italian company in framework of the loan agreement signed between Egypt as represented by The Ministry of International Cooperation and The OPEC fund for International Development (VIENNA).

 

4- The bank’s contribution in joint loans of the corporate sector

 §    Banque Misr’s Contribution to the loan of Suez Cement Co. in support of the Egyptian Industry

To activate the Bank’s leading role in boosting the national economy, Banque Misr has contributed to the syndicated loan to Suez Cement Co. which totaled L.E.1200 million. Mr. Mohamed Ozalb, Vice Chairman, signed the loan protocol.

Suez Cement Co. is a leading company in the cement industry in Egypt. The total amount of the loan, L.E.1200 million, is divided into two segments: first segment is L.E. 900 million as a middle- term loan for four years and the second segment is L.E. is 300 million as a revolving facility for four years. The Bank’s share in the loan is L.E. 240 million – 20% of the total amount of the loan.

§    Banque Misr boosts Egyptian tourism

Banque Misr contributed in a loan totaled L.E.140 million granted to the Arab International Co. for Hotels and Tourism, including a segment of $ 3 million.

Banque Misr acts as a financier, and guarantee and document agent with Societe Arabe Internationale De Banque in its capacity as a financier, general coordinator and finance agent in addition to Arab International Bank (AIB) and Port Said Banking Corporation as partners in the loan.

Banque Misr’s share in this loan is L.E. fifty two million and nine hundred thousand equaling the loan agent; the Arab International Bank (AIB)’s share is $ three million (equivalent to about L.E.17.2 million); and Port Said Banking Corporation‘s share is also L.E. 17 million.

Mr. Mohamed Ozalb, Vice Chairman, signed the loan protocol on behalf of Banque Misr. He explained the loan data, purpose and importance in boosting Egyptian Tourism.

Worth noting the Arab International Co. for Hotels and Tourism was founded in 1997 with a capital of $110 million. Banque Misr is a prominent shareholder as it owns 8.36% of the company’s capital. Also the Company owns several successful tourism projects such as Ramsis Hilton Hotel and Mall Annex, Sonesta Port Said Hotel and Mall Annex, and Hilton Waterfalls Hotel – one of the most fabulous resorts in Sharm El-Sheikh.

§ Banque Misr and effective solutions for the Housing Crisis

Banque Misr , under the sponsorship of the Central bank of Egypt , and the participation of several banks and the ministry of housing utilities and urban development , signed a cooperation protocol aiming to provide 500000 housing units suitable to be modern housing for people with limited income in the coming 5 years. The protocol was signed with a number of governorates among which are Dakahliya, Ismailiya, Mansoura, Fayoum and Alexandria. The protocol will also be applied in the rest of the governorates. Mr. Mohamed Barakat chairman of Cairo and Misr banks signed the protocol with minister Ahmed Al Maghraby, minister of housing and HE Dr. Farouk Al Okda, governor of the Central Bank with the attendance of the chairmen of the participating banks. Immediate financial support is given by the government with a maximum limit of 15000 L.E from every housing unit with a 5000 L.E deposit. The value of the housing unit is 50000 L.E, out of which 30000 L.E is a loan to be paid in 20 years. Each governorate will decide who will receive this loan, while being totally committed to provide all facilities and basic services. Mr. Mohamed Barakat stressed that this initiative is a main step confirming the role of Banque Misr in the effective participation in national projects and in pushing the wheel of economic development. Egypt’s share in this protocol is 800 million L.E.

 

5- Banque Misr offers El Kheir certificates

In light of the developments currently witnessed by the banking sector and the variety of products offered to clients especially in savings whether in local or foreign currency. Banque Misr has offered its clients as usual distinguished savings as a means of supporting the idea of the continuance of the bank’s effective participation out of a belief in the social role of financial institutions. Banque Misr offered El Kheir certificates with a 10 years period renewed automatically in the due date. The certificate is issued in the name of a normal person or a nominal one(the donor) and the revenue is given according to the client’s desire(monthly, every 3months or every 6 months).The certificates are issued starting from 500 L.E or US Dollar and up till 10000 L.E or US Dollar, and it can be bought from any Banque Misr branch without any commissions or fees and this is in addition to the possibility of receiving a total refund of the certificate’s value after 6 months of the issuing of the certificate.

It is worth mentioning that Banque Misr continues offering banking services of a social nature directed towards the different sectors of society and especially the poor and the needy in the form of periodical revenue. The bank also has donations accounts for several institutions and charity organizations like: The Egyptian food bank organization-The Diabetic children care center-The Disabled Child-The Ministry of health and Population’s Initiative to treat the needy-The Kasr Al Eieni Tumours Friends Organization-Liver Research hospital and Institution and others……

Banque Misr is keen on strengthening the ties with its clients and encouraging every Egyptian to participate in volunteer work

 

6- Donation Accounts

 

Banque Misr plays a prominent role in developing and providing assistance to the Egyptian and Arab community through the charity projects in different economic sectors and opening donation accounts for charitable associations and institutions that are considered legitimate recipients of charity and Zakat money from clients.  7- CSR community service, Banque Misr Foundation for Community Development and Welfare

Out of Banque Misr’s belief in social responsibility and its commitment to helping in the development of the Egyptian society, the bank founded a non profit institution or organization under the name Banque Misr Institution or organization for Development and Community Service. This organization has an independent legal entity separate from the bank, managed by a council of trustees headed by Mr. Mohamed Barakat, chairman of the bank. The organization aims to focus on the fields of health, education, culture, economic development and environmental protection. Furthermore, the organization or institution also aims to support the civil society in the execution of developmental projects, offering scholarships to excellent university students and financial support to scientific research centers, schools, universities and public hospitals; this is in addition to helping the elderly and those with special needs to live normally.
