Mr. Mohamed A. El-Hamasy

Board Member, Banque Misr

Mr. El-Hamamsy has over 35 years experience in corporate and project management, strategic planning, marketing, finance, human resources, training and information systems. He has been a Board Member of Banque Misr since 5th of January 2005.

During the course of his impressive career, Mr. El-Hamamsy held various managerial positions with IBM Egypt from 1977 to 1997, eventually reaching the position of Managing Director. His responsibilities included introducing new organization concepts shifting from a functional organization to a matrix organization to capitalize on the changing IT environment in Egypt. He also introduced the Strategic Planning Cycle in IBM operations in Egypt and successfully implemented it to redirect operations from a technology vendor to a services company. Moreover, Mr. El-Hamamsy was responsible for the financial soundness of IBM operations in Egypt and for the implementation of all personnel programs not only in Egypt but throughout the Middle East. He also introduced Total Quality Management and achieved ISO-9000 certification for the company in addition to lecturing at international conferences about IBM’s Management Development Programs.  Mr. El-Hamamsy also held positions in the European Headquarters of IBM and was responsible for overseeing country operations in the Middle East and North Africa as well as Greece, Turkey, Pakistan and most of Africa.

He moved from IBM Egypt to MegaCom SAE where he was a Senior Consulting Partner for two years before becoming the CEO of Vodafone Egypt. From 1999 to 2002, Mr. El-Hamamsy’s accomplishments at Vodafone Egypt included moving the company from a start-up phase to semi-maturity during which time  the number of employees tripled and revenues grew five-fold making it one of the most profitable companies in Egypt. He achieved subscriber, revenue and profit growth during his tenure that garnered numerous Vodafone International Group Awards for Distinguished Performance. Additionally, Mr. El-Hamamsy introduced Total Quality Management and achieved ISO-9000 and ISO-14000 certification for the company and established a program to export software and engineering services to other Vodafone companies throughout the world including Hungary and Kenya.

Mr.  El-Hamamsy also serves on the advisory boards of a number of public and private sector organizations including the General Authority for Investments and Free Zones (GAFI) as a member of the Board of Directors; Ministry of Tourism as Advisor to the Minister for Strategy and Development; Vodafone Egypt as Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors; and the Vodafone Egypt Foundation as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Mr. El-Hamamsy received his B.SC from Cairo University and an M.A. in Management as well as an M.A. in Arabic Studies, both from the American University in Cairo.
