Banque Misr attains license to operate in North and South Sudan

Banque Misr has approached the Central Bank of Sudan to obtain the necessary licenses to establish two banks: the first will be located in Northern Sudan through the establishment of a new bank or the acquisition of an existing bank offered for sale and will operate according to the Islamic Sharia’. The second will be a new bank in Southern Sudan, and will operate as a traditional commercial entity with a capital of $15 million to be repaid over three years.

In pursuit of Banque Misr’s effective participation in investment opportunities in Sudan, and in order to enhance and develop bilateral trade between Egypt and Sudan, the new banks would be a positive addition to Banque Misr’s current international network of branches and subsidiaries in Germany and France, Lebanon, Jordan and UAE and would boost finance and investment opportunities of international trade traffic between Sudan and these countries on one hand and between Egypt and Sudan on the other hand.

Banque Misr has already obtained the necessary approvals from its board and the Central Bank of Egypt, and is now in the process of identifying an adviser to carry out the necessary relevant executive work in Sudan.

It is worth mentioning that Banque Misr has established the "Nile Fund", which is a joint fund with equal stakes in cooperation with Banque du Caire and the National Bank of Egypt with the purpose of financing economic projects in Africa and especially Nile Basin countries, with an issued capital of one billion dollars and paid capital of $150 million. The fund managers are currently considering the prospects of financing part of the Ring Road in Addis Ababa.

It should also be noted that Banque Misr has obtained the approval of the Central Bank of Egypt to establish a new branch in Syria and is currently waiting for approval from the Central Bank of Syria to start the necessary executive procedures.
